Before creation God was all alone. There was no one else and nothing else. But God was not satisfied to be all alone forever. He wanted someone to satisfy His heart, someone who would match Him, appreciate Him, love Him, and be one with Him. Such a person was not easy for God to find. The first problem was that there was no one else. The second problem was how could anyone match God?
So God made a plan of what He would do. When the plan was ready God set to work to carry out His plan. He began His work by creating the heavens and the earth. He created the whole universe out of nothing. Only God can do that. He made the things we can see like the earth, the sun, the moon and the stars. He also made things we cannot see like angels. This was God's original creation. The Bible tells us that the angels shouted for joy when God laid the foundations of the earth.
At some point Satan rebelled against God and corrupted the universe. A third of the angels followed him to become his deputies in his kingdom of darkness. When God judged that situation the earth became waste and empty. The whole earth was covered with water. The heavens no longer shone and the earth was in darkness. But God was not finished. He began to restore His creation and to create something more.
His Spirit was hovering over the waters that covered the earth. Then God spoke. He said, "Let there be light." As soon as He said it light was there. How powerful God's Word is! It is not dead but living and life giving. The light God made was good, much better than darkness. After God made the light there was an evening and a morning, the first day.
On the second day God made the air of the sky. He put some of the water up in the sky. The rest of the water He left on the earth.
On the third day God said, "Let the dry land appear." So God separated the land from the waters. He called the land, earth. He called the waters, seas. God saw that the land was good. On the land God made all kinds of plants and trees to grow. The plants had seeds which could grow to be more plants of the same kind. This also was good in God's sight.
The fourth day God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens." The main lights God made were the sun, the moon, and the stars. The greater light, the sun, ruled the day and the lesser light, the moon, ruled the night. These lights are needed so there could be life on earth. They also give us days, months, seasons, and years. God saw that the lights were good.
The fifth day God made the fish of the seas and the birds of the air. The seas were filled with all kinds of living creatures. The birds flew in the air above the earth. These kinds of living creatures have a higher life than the life of the plants. God saw that it was good and He blessed them to multiply.
On the sixth day God made the things that live on the earth. He made the wild animals and the cattle, the domestic animals. He made all the things that creep on the ground. Everything He made multiplied after its own kind. When animals have little ones they are always the same kind of animal.
God also created man on the sixth day. He created man in His own image and likeness so man is like God. God has thoughts, man also has thoughts. God has feelings, man also has feelings. God decides things, man also decides things. But man is not God. God made us, not we ourselves. God's thoughts, feelings, and will are divine, man's are merely human. Even so, it is a great blessing that God made us in His image. This is a great item in God's plan. God created man male and female so we could multiply. God also commanded man to rule over the earth for Him. These are other parts of God's plan. After God created man He saw that it was very good.
On the seventh day God rested. It was not because He was tired from working six days. Even though there are so many things in the universe it was easy for God to create all of them. God rested because He was happy with what He had made. So God also blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
