Isobel grew up in a Christian home but never experienced God for herself. Thus, when she went to university she was easily influenced to reject the belief in God that she had been taught at home. That was the beginning of a downward trend in her life that seemed like a release from Christian duties at first but later brought her into darkness and despair. This climaxed when she found out that her fiancee was dating someone else behind her back. She was at the point of committing suicide when she cried out to God, "God, if there be a God, if You will prove to me that You are, and if You will give me peace, I will give You my whole life. I'll do anything You ask me to do, go where You send me, obey You all my days."
From that time forward Isobel began to learn to follow the Lord. The Lord also was faithful to bring her into contact with believers who were able to help her build up a living relationship with the Lord by means of prayer and receiving His speaking through His Word. Outwardly, her life did not change overnight but she enjoyed a living communion with the Lord every day. Thus she became very sensitive to the Lord's speaking and He was able to lead her on step by step into a life of fruitful service in His work.
Isobel was very detailed and open in writing about her experiences. She included her shortcomings and failures so that her story is very practical and helpful. This book covers her life up until the time she sailed to China as a missionary. Even in her youth, her life is an inspiring example of what the Lord can do in and through someone who is faithful to Him.
