Additional Thoughts on Answering God's Call

Abram (better known as Abraham) is one of the foremost examples of faith in the Bible. In all the details of his story we can see what real faith is. It is not that Abram was a hero stubbornly insisting on something against all reason who in the end was proved right. Rather, Abram was worshiping idols just like everyone else until one day when the Lord appeared to him. The Lord's appearing was marvelous and attractive to Abram but he was fearful and hesitant to go out according to the Lord's call. Of course, the fact that the Lord did not tell him where to go made it harder. He needed his father's help to get started. But his father didn't have the Lord's leading. Although they traveled far enough to have made it to the good land, they never crossed the Euphrates river. Without the Lord's leading they were unable to reach His goal.

The Lord's appearing to him again at Haran strengthened and encouraged Abram much more so that he had the faith to go without his father's help. Thus we can conclude that Abram's faith did not originate with him. It was infused into him by the Lord's appearing. When Abram did follow the Lord, the Lord's presence was with him to guide him where to go. When he came to the good land the Lord appeared to him again, this time with a promise of giving the land to his descendants. As Abram was getting to know the Lord better his faith was growing and his relationship with the Lord was deepening.
