Additional Thoughts on the Development of Human Culture

When God created Adam he enjoyed a sweet fellowship with God. In that fellowship man and God were in harmony. God imposed no other requirement on man than to be careful about what he ate. Taking in the wrong thing would lead to death. But that warning was not enough to prevent him from taking in the wrong tree. Through this one act the sinful nature of Satan entered into the human race. From that time onward every person is born with two natures: the good nature created by God and the evil nature of Satan. No human being could be altogether evil; his good nature would never allow it. Similarly, no one can claim that he never sinned; none of us can completely escape the evil nature we inherited from Adam.

Even though Adam did not listen to God's warning, God was still there caring for him. Thus, when Cain's anger was opening the door to sin, God warned him about what was happening. Cain totally rejected God's warning, was captured by sin, and left God's presence. He founded a society in which the only thing governing people was their own conscience. They had rejected God's rule but had not yet established human government.

Every kind of evil flourished in this society. It degenerated to the point where most people were living according to the lusts of their flesh. It was at this time that some of the fallen angels took wives of the daughters of men. The children produced were called Nephilim. They were the giants the Bible talks about. The most well known one was the one David defeated with his slingshot - Goliath. He was nine and a half feet (3 meters) tall.

God would not tolerate this mixture of the human life with the life of the fallen angels. This is the reason He needed to judge the whole human race with the flood. This is also the reason He commanded the Israelites to slaughter the Canaanite tribes that had previously occupied the good land. Their race had also been polluted by this evil mixture. The angels who committed this kind of fornication have been bound in pits of gloom until the final judgement (Jude 6 - 7).

God loves man. He created us for himself. Even while men were falling further and further into sin God's Spirit was striving with them urging them to repent and come back to Him. But God won't tolerate evil forever. It is the same today. He is still giving us a chance to repent and come back to Him. One day soon His judgement will come again.
